Giant Rats Are Eating The Wiring Out Of Electric Vehicles In the UK

How do you file an insurance claim for rat damage? Monster rats are wreaking havoc on cars across Britain, causing an estimated $1.69 billion in damage last year, and they particularly love Teslas. Pest control experts say the rodents are attracted to electric vehicles because their wiring contains soy and peanut oil mixed with plastic, which tastes like food to rats. Electric cars are also targeted because their batteries warm up while charging overnight, creating cozy nests for the pests on cold nights.

The average repair claim has jumped to over $3-thousand, though one unlucky driver faced a bill for over $30-thousand. Rat attacks on cars surged 28-percent between 2023 and 2024, according to insurance company Aviva. Croydon in south London is the worst-affected area, followed by Birmingham, the City of London, Surrey, Manchester, Essex, Kent, and Leeds. About 200 million rats now live in the UK, outnumbering people three to one.
