*LIST* The AKC’s Most Popular Dog Breeds In The U.S.

Do you feel like you see Frenchies everywhere these days? That’s probably because the French bulldog is America’s most popular dog breed for the third year in a row, according to the American Kennel Club (AKC).

The world’s largest purebred dog registry uses their registration stats to rank the country’s most popular breeds of the past year and the numbers are now in for 2024.

  • The Frenchie is enjoying a three-peat after snagging the top spot from the Labrador retriever in 2022, a title the breed had previously held for 31 years.
  • French bulldogs have climbed from number 14 in 2012 to number two in 2021, and they’ve been holding strong at number one since.
  • People love their playful nature and compact size, making them especially popular in cities.
  • But the beloved lab is still pretty popular, coming in second on the list.
  • One breed that’s popularity is continuing to climb is the cane corso. Registrations for this loyal breed have increased 414% over the last decade.
  • It’s gone from 47th most popular back in 2014 to 14th in 2024.
  • The AKC recognizes 201 breeds and their least popular ones are often rare breeds. The English foxhound comes in 201st, making it the least popular overall, followed by the Bergamasco sheepdog and the grand basset griffon vendeen.
