Shopping for some people is simple, but others are much harder to find presents for during the holidays. You’d think the people we’re closest to would be the easiest to buy for, but a new survey suggests the opposite may be true. It finds that partners and spouses are the hardest to get gifts for (21%), followed by kids (14%), and their mom (13%).
According to the poll of 2-thousand Americans who celebrate the winter holidays:
- People spend an average of nine hours trying to pick the perfect present for the most difficult person to shop for on their list.
- While 22% of respondents wait until after Thanksgiving to start holiday gift shopping, 12% wait until the week before or even the week of their gift exchange.
- The average American plans to give 16 presents this holiday season, including to kids (3.7 each), partners (2.7), pets (1.7) and in-laws (1).
- Nearly a third (29%) want their present to be a surprise for the recipient, but another 29% just ask the person what they want.
- Beyond shopping for gifts, the average person experiences 16 different “headaches” or specific holiday challenges during this time of year.
- These include little things, like trying to untangle Christmas lights (14%) to dealing with difficult family dynamics (15%) and tackling their holiday to-do list (20%).
- Those lists can be long, as respondents have an average of 14 different tasks to complete before the holiday itself arrives.
- People start completing them about five weeks in advance and will spend five hours each of those weeks to get it all done, for a total of 25 hours on holiday to-dos.
