While getting ready for the birth of their new son, Logan Ivey and his fiancée Michelle came across a 30-year-old Gerber coupon that was gifted to Ivey’s mom when he was a newborn. The coupon, which gave $1 off any Gerber item, had no expiration date, so the couple took it to Target and picked out a pair of Gerber socks. The staff at Target were initially confused by the coupon because it didn’t have a barcode they could scan, but a manager was eventually called in and honored the coupon.
Ivey shared the story on social media and the video went viral, racking up over 17-million views and 2.4-million likes. Someone from Gerber noticed the video, too and responded with a generous offer. In a follow-up viral video, a Gerber spokesperson praised Ivey for using "a little piece of our history" and offered the couple a year's supply of baby food and a wardrobe of baby clothes.
Ivey later shared that he told his mom about the fun interaction and she shared the video with her best friend, the one who’d given her the coupon 30 years ago. She wasn’t mad, in fact she loved that the coupon had sparked such a viral moment. Fortunately, Ivey didn’t have to give up having the keepsake from his birth, because Gerber sent him a recreation of the original card and coupon in the care package they sent the new parents alongside the cut-up one he’d used at Target.
