Texas Wildfire Is Getting Close To A Nuclear Weapons Facility

A fast-moving wildfire in the Texas Panhandle is threatening the nation's biggest nuclear weapons facility. The Pantex Plant is about 17 miles northeast of Amarillo, not far from the Smokehouse Creek Fire, which grew from 40-thousand acres to 200-thousand acres in just six hours on Tuesday and is burning out of control. The blaze is being fanned by high winds and has scorched over 400 square miles so far, larger than New York City. Officials posted on X Tuesday that personnel at the plant were building a fire barrier to protect the facilities and that all nuclear weapons on site were "safe and unaffected." Thousands of people have been evacuated as the blaze spreads.
