'Fake Doctors, Real Friends' Pays Tribute To The Fans

This special episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends is all about the fan calls. Every week, Zach Braff and Donald Faison talk to one of the many Scrubs fans worldwide, hearing about their lives and families, answering their questions about the show, and fixing their problems in one of their popular segments. Fake Doctors producer Joelle puts together four memorable examples of fan calls, like Nor from India who made creator Bill Lawrence laugh, or Mark from Chicago, who Bill called an “evil genius” because he had a cat in his lap, or Kate, who listens to the show in her car in the grocery store parking lot as a reprieve from her toddler. As Joelle says, the fans add so much to the show, sharing inspiring stories and creating beautiful artwork, and the guys are so thankful and appreciative. So here’s looking at you, fans.

Mark commends the show for highlighting the heroism of healthcare workers as well as showcasing healthy male friendships. He asks if they learned anything about the healthcare industry from doing the show that stuck with them, and Zach says he really learned that “the doctors...can’t do anything without the help of amazing nurses." Donald loves when the Scrubs characters find ways to help people without insurance, calling them “rule-benders” who save lives. And Bill says the real J.D. allowed Bill to steal all his stories, but only if the show “was about a bunch of people, flaws and all, that cared most about helping and taking care of other people.” As for the “Guy Love” between Turk and J.D., Donald can’t speak highly enough of it: “My comfortability around other men, and not being afraid to be who I am and accept who they are, that’s all thanks to Scrubs,” he says.

Kate makes everyone laugh talking about her quarantine with a nursing baby and a toddler, thanking Zach for caring so much about babies latching or not, and commiserating with Donald’s wife CaCee Cobb about how their kids will always interrupt their mom to ask for something even when their father is standing right there. Kate will sometimes spend an extra hour in the grocery store parking lot just to get some time for herself; CaCee admits to purposefully driving to a fast food restaurant that was 45 minutes away just to get a break. Nor calls in to tell them about switching careers from wedding planning to sustainable farming, that season nine “doesn’t count,” and if Donald wishes Turk had been single longer because of all the hot guest stars. Then Katie from Ontario wraps it all up with a “gooey lovey message of thanks to her wife” that Joelle saved for last. Hear all these hilarious and sometimes profound conversations with the lifeblood of the show on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
